Income Tax Calculator: Custom Brackets and Worked Examples

Calculate progressive income-tax arithmetic using brackets, deductions and credits that you supply. This is a scenario calculator: it has no current-country tax presets and does not prepare a return, predict a refund or calculate payroll contributions.

The prefilled brackets are fictional teaching figures. Replace them with the official brackets for your jurisdiction, filing status, income type and tax year.

How to enter brackets correctly

Each line contains the cumulative upper limit of taxable income and its percentage rate, separated by a colon. List positive limits in strictly increasing order, and finish with Infinity for the open-ended top bracket. For example, 40000:10 means a 10% rate on the slice above the preceding limit up to 40,000, not 10% on all income.

If your official bands already include a tax-free slice, do not also enter that same allowance as a deduction. Some jurisdictions express taxable-income bands after allowances; others show gross-income thresholds. Read the source’s definition before copying numbers.

Check the example by hand

With the fictional defaults, 50,000 income and no deductions produce 50,000 taxable income. The first 10,000 at 0% costs 0; the next 30,000 at 10% costs 3,000; the remaining 10,000 at 20% costs 2,000. Total bracket tax is 5,000. The effective rate on gross income is 10%, while the rate on the final slice is 20%.

Entering a 5,000 deduction instead leaves 45,000 taxable income and 4,000 bracket tax. A 500 non-refundable credit reduces that result to 3,500. Credits here cannot create a negative tax amount: refundable credits, phase-outs, minimum taxes and other special rules are outside this simple model.

Choose the right source and year

For US federal questions, start with the IRS rates and brackets and relevant return instructions. For UK questions, use HMRC Income Tax rates and allowances, including different rules where applicable. These links are sources to check; the calculator does not import their rates automatically.

Keep the tax year with your worksheet. A year in a webpage address is not evidence that a particular schedule applies. Changes in residence, filing status, income type, allowance tapering and deductions can change the calculation.

What the result excludes

  • Social Security, Medicare, National Insurance or other contributions.
  • Separate state, provincial or local calculations.
  • Capital-gain schedules, business taxes, VAT and sales taxes.
  • Refundable credits, rebates, surcharges, phase-outs and eligibility checks.
  • Withholding reconciliation, instalment dates and penalties.

Consequently, the difference between gross income and this scenario tax is not a take-home-pay estimate. For freelancing, see our self-employed tax planning guide; income-tax brackets alone do not determine a freelancer’s liability.

Common questions

Can I use a flat tax?

Yes, enter one line such as Infinity:10 for an illustrative 10% rate. Any real allowance or exemption must be handled according to its rules.

Why are deductions capped at income?

This calculator sets taxable income to zero when deductions exceed income. It does not model losses or carryforwards.

Why was an entry rejected?

Use non-negative amounts, rates from 0 to 100, strictly increasing limits and one final Infinity bracket. Remove currency symbols and thousands separators from bracket input.
