Countdown Timer: Count Down to a Date and Time

Count down to a date and time in your device’s local time zone. Name the event, choose its target time and start the display to see days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining.

Countdown Timer

Count down to any date and time — a birthday, holiday, exam, launch, wedding or the New Year — with a live ticking display of days, hours, minutes and seconds.

Note: The countdown uses your device’s clock and time zone. Your most recent event is saved in this browser so it’s still here when you come back.

Set up an event countdown

  1. Enter a short event name, such as “Exam starts”.
  2. Choose the target date and local time. For an event at the start of a day, select 00:00; for an evening event, check that you selected the intended hour.
  3. Select Start Countdown and read the target date displayed below the clock.

When the target is reached, the page shows a completion message. This version provides a visual countdown; it does not provide an audible alarm, an email reminder or a notification while your browser is closed.

Elapsed days are not calendar dates

The timer subtracts the current instant from the target instant and divides the remaining duration into 24-hour days, hours, minutes and seconds. For example, a target 49 hours away appears as 2 days and 1 hour.

That is different from counting dates on a calendar. A change in daylight-saving time can make the interval between the same local time on consecutive dates 23 or 25 hours. Use the Date Difference Calculator for calendar-day counts.

Which time zone does it use?

The input uses your device’s local time zone. If a livestream starts at 18:00 in another city, first use the Time Zone Converter to find the matching date and time where you are. Enter that local result here. Check both the date and the hour because conversion can move an event to the preceding or following day.

Keep the device clock and time zone correct. A clock that is five minutes fast also makes the displayed countdown five minutes shorter.

What happens if I close or hide the page?

The latest event is stored in this browser when browser storage is available. It is not an account-based event and does not automatically appear on your other devices. Clearing site data or using private browsing can remove it. Recheck the target if you change your device’s time zone.

Browsers can delay timers in inactive tabs, and a sleeping or closed device cannot provide a dependable live display. The countdown recalculates from the clock when its script runs again. MDN explains browser throttling of background timers. For an event you must be alerted about, also set a reminder in your device’s clock or calendar app.

Printing the countdown

Print or save as PDF to keep the event name and displayed time. A printed copy is a snapshot; its remaining time will not continue to count down. Include the target date and time when sharing event details.
