
There is no protein requirement that changes automatically on your 60th birthday. Guidance for older adults often discusses 1.0–1.2 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, but the population and health context matter. The PROT-AGE position paper specifically discusses people older than 65; its range is not a universal prescription for everyone aged 60 or more.
This guide separates published guidance from the arithmetic. It shows what different grams-per-kilogram factors mean and which questions to take to a clinician or registered dietitian.
What the guidance actually says

The adult reference is summarized by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The 2022 ESPEN practical guideline makes individual adjustment part of the recommendation, not an optional afterthought. These sources inform the discussion; they do not determine the appropriate amount for every reader.
Weight-based arithmetic—not personal targets
Protein in grams per day = body weight in kilograms × selected g/kg/day factor. The table compares factors so that their numerical effect is visible. It does not tell you which column to choose.

For example, 165 lb × 0.45359237 = approximately 74.84 kg. If a 1.0–1.2 factor has been chosen as appropriate, the arithmetic gives approximately 75–90 g/day. The calculation does not establish that this range is right for a person simply because their weight is 165 lb.
Why kidney status and illness change the decision
PROT-AGE discusses higher needs in many acute or chronic illnesses, but identifies severe kidney disease without dialysis as an important exception. Do not use an “older adult” or “recovery” label to automatically raise your intake.
The National Kidney Foundation explains that protein advice can differ before and during dialysis and should be individualized. A single “kidney disease” grams-per-kilogram preset cannot represent both situations. If you have kidney disease or a prescribed restriction, follow your healthcare team’s plan instead of selecting a generic calculator setting.
Unintended weight loss, poor appetite or difficulty chewing or swallowing also deserves assessment. ESPEN recommends nutritional screening and follow-up assessment for older people at risk of malnutrition. Simply adding protein can miss a problem with total energy intake, food access or an underlying condition.
Turn an agreed daily amount into a usable food plan
Once an appropriate daily amount is agreed, count protein from actual portions. The foods in a meal do not establish its protein total unless quantities and product labels are known. Here is an invented allocation of a 75 g day:

This is an addition example, not a required meal distribution or a claim that a particular serving of yogurt, lentils or fish contains the listed amount. Choose foods and portions that fit the person’s appetite, preferences, allergies and clinical plan, then use the label or a reliable food-composition record to check the total.
Use the calculator without confusing presets with evidence

Frequently asked questions
Is 100 g per day automatically too much after 60?
No age-only answer fits everyone. At 100 kg it is 1.0 g/kg; at 50 kg it is 2.0 g/kg. The same total means different things, and body weight alone still does not settle suitability.
Should I select the highest number in a range?
No. The upper number is not automatically better. Clarify the reason for the chosen factor and whether the health conditions in its supporting evidence match yours.
Is a protein shake necessary?
Not simply because a calculator displays a gap. First check ordinary food intake and portions. If eating enough is difficult or there is illness, ask a dietitian about suitable food changes or supplementation.
Does protein alone prevent loss of strength?
No. PROT-AGE also discusses appropriately tailored endurance and resistance exercise. Nutrition and activity need to fit the person’s abilities and medical circumstances; a protein target is not a guaranteed outcome.
