Tip Chart: 10% to 25% Tips for $10–$300 Bills

This tip chart shows the tip amount—not the final bill—for 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25% tips. Find your bill in the first column and read across to the percentage you want. For a bill that falls between rows, use the nearest amount as an estimate or enter the exact bill in the CalcRange tip calculator.

Bill plus tip totals

The charts above list only the gratuity. To find the amount you pay, add the chosen tip to the bill. These common examples show the difference:

Bill With 15% With 18% With 20% With 25%
$25 $28.75 $29.50 $30.00 $31.25
$50 $57.50 $59.00 $60.00 $62.50
$75 $86.25 $88.50 $90.00 $93.75
$100 $115.00 $118.00 $120.00 $125.00
$200 $230.00 $236.00 $240.00 $250.00

How to use the chart for any bill

If the exact bill is not shown, combine two easy rows or adjust from the nearest value. Suppose the bill is $68 and you want an 18% tip:

  1. Use the $60 row: 18% is $10.80.
  2. Calculate 18% of the remaining $8: $8 × 0.18 = $1.44.
  3. Add the two tip amounts: $10.80 + $1.44 = $12.24.
  4. Add the tip to the bill: $68 + $12.24 = $80.24.

For a fast estimate, use the $70 row instead. Its 18% tip is $12.60, only 36 cents above the exact amount.

What tip percentage should you choose?

A chart calculates whatever percentage you select; it cannot decide what is socially appropriate. In the United States, Emily Post lists 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down wait service. Actual behavior varies. A Pew Research Center survey found that most Americans who always or often tip at sit-down restaurants chose 15%, 18%, or 20% for an average meal, with 15% the single most common response in that survey.

Current payment data can look different from survey answers. Toast reported an average of 19.3% for card and digital tips at full-service restaurants on its platform in the first quarter of 2026. That is a platform-specific transaction average, not a rule for every diner or every restaurant.

Use the tip percentage guide to compare common ranges for restaurants, delivery, salons, hotels, rides, and other services. Always check whether a service charge is already included.

Three mental-math shortcuts behind the chart

10%: move the decimal

Move the bill’s decimal one place left. Ten percent of $84.60 is $8.46.

20%: double 10%

Double $8.46 to get a 20% tip of $16.92.

15%: add half of 10%

Half of $8.46 is $4.23. Add it to $8.46 for a 15% tip of $12.69. For more methods, see how to calculate a tip.

Should the chart use the pre-tax or after-tax bill?

The chart works with whichever number you choose. Traditional U.S. restaurant guidance commonly uses the pre-tax subtotal. Some people intentionally use the after-tax total for convenience or generosity. The pre-tax versus post-tax guide shows how much the choice changes the final payment.
