Whether you’re travelling, moving into a new place, or just praying somewhere unfamiliar, finding the Qibla — the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah — is the first thing you need to sort out. The good news: there are several easy ways, and they all agree if you do them right.
How to find Qibla direction: the quick answer
The Qibla is the great-circle direction from your location to the Kaaba in Makkah. The easiest accurate method is a Qibla-finder or prayer app that uses your GPS coordinates. Without a phone, you can use a compass (adjusting for magnetic declination) or the sun at known times.
Method 1: Your phone (easiest)
A Qibla compass app reads your GPS location and your phone’s magnetometer, then points an arrow toward Makkah. To get a reliable reading:
- Hold the phone flat and level.
- Calibrate the compass (the classic “figure-8” motion) if the app asks.
- Move away from metal, speakers, magnets and electronics, which throw off the sensor.
Most prayer-time tools also show your Qibla bearing in degrees, which you can then match on any compass.
Method 2: A magnetic compass
If you know your Qibla bearing (say, 58° from true north), a compass gets you there — but with one correction. A compass points to magnetic north, which differs from true north by an amount called declination, and that varies by location.
So: take your true-north Qibla bearing, apply your local declination (your app or a declination map gives it), and read that adjusted bearing on the compass. Skipping the declination step is the most common reason a compass-based Qibla is off.
Method 3: Using the sun
Twice a year the sun is directly over the Kaaba, and at those exact moments the sun’s direction is the Qibla everywhere it’s daytime. More practically, you can use the sun’s known position: at solar noon the sun is due south (in the northern hemisphere) or due north (in the southern), giving you a reliable reference line to measure your Qibla bearing from. Knowing your local Dhuhr (solar noon) time helps here.
Why two apps can disagree slightly
Small differences usually come from three things: a poorly calibrated phone compass, nearby metal or magnets, or an app using magnetic north without correcting for declination. Calibrate, step away from interference, and make sure you’re comparing true-north bearings.
A note on “great circle” direction
On a flat map, the Qibla can look like it points in a surprising direction (for example, somewhat north-east from North America). That’s normal — the shortest path across a globe (a great circle) doesn’t follow the straight line you’d draw on a flat map. Trust the calculated bearing, not the flat-map intuition.
