Where GMT came from
Greenwich Mean Time is the older of the two by roughly three centuries. The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, on the edge of London, opened in 1675, and its clocks were set by watching the sun cross the local meridian. Then in 1884, delegates from 25 nations met in Washington and chose Greenwich as the world’s prime meridian, which made GMT the reference point for everyone else’s clocks.
So GMT is solar time. Noon is when the sun sits (on average) directly above Greenwich. That “on average” is doing real work here: Earth’s rotation wobbles and is gradually slowing, so a day measured by the sun is not perfectly constant. For a sailor in 1850, that was fine. What UTC is and who keeps it
Coordinated Universal Time is the modern replacement, in force in its current form since January 1, 1972. Instead of watching the sun, it averages several hundred atomic clocks kept in national laboratories around the world, coordinated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures near Paris. An atomic second never drifts.
There is one messy detail. Earth’s rotation slows down while atomic time does not, so UTC would slowly float away from solar time if nobody intervened. The fix is the leap second: 27 of them have been inserted since 1972, the most recent on December 31, 2016, keeping UTC within 0.9 seconds of Earth’s actual rotation. What GMT+5 or UTC+5 actually means
A UTC offset is a count of hours ahead of or behind the Greenwich reference. Pakistan runs on UTC+5, so when it is 12:00 UTC it is 17:00 in Karachi. Simple. The plus sign means east of Greenwich, the minus sign means west.

A worked example: Karachi to New York
Say you are in Karachi and want a 6:00 p.m. call with a client in New York in July. Always work through UTC rather than jumping city to city.
Step 1: convert your local time to UTC. Karachi is UTC+5, so subtract the offset. 18:00 minus 5 hours is 13:00 UTC.
Step 2: find New York’s offset for that date. In July the city observes Eastern Daylight Time, which is UTC-4.
Step 3: apply it. 13:00 UTC minus 4 hours is 9:00 a.m. in New York. Perfectly civilized.
Now rerun the same call in January. New York reverts to UTC-5, so your 6:00 p.m. lands at 8:00 a.m. instead. Nothing changed on the Pakistani side, since Pakistan skips daylight saving entirely; the other end moved. So which one should you use?
For anything casual, either. Nobody will misread “GMT+5” on a wedding card.
